The 102nd version of the WIAA Boys State Tennis Tournament gets underway on Thursday, June 5th. The first recorded WIAA Tennis Tournament was held in 1925, but there are references to the tournament starting in 1919. Since 1973 the tournament has been held at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.
The FRCC has qualified two individuals and four doubles teams for this year’s WIAA State Tournament. Junior Alex Thomas of Notre Dame Academy and Sophomore Martin Garcia of Green Bay Southwest both qualified in singles play. This is Garcia’s first time qualifying for the state tournament and he will play his first match at 10:30am on Thursday. Thomas is making his third straight appearance in the state tournament. In 2023 Thomas won his first match before losing in the second round in Division 1. Notre Dame Academy competed in Division 2 in 2024 and Thomas was the D2 runner-up last year losing to Adrian Yin of Brookfield Academy 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Thomas will compete in Division 1 in 2025 as Notre Dame Academy has moved back to that level. Thomas received the 3-seed having amassed a 24-1 record this year and received a bye in the first round. Thomas’ first match will be a second round match at 4:15pm on Thursday.
Green Bay Preble, Bay Port, Sheboygan North and De Pere have all qualified doubles teams in the doubles tournament. Seniors Vikram Khot and Isaac Fagre of Green Bay Preble are competing in their first state tournament and will play their 1st match on Thursday at 1:30pm vs the 11-seed. Bay Port senior Sam Stimpson and his partner, sophomore Brady Wells are also competing in their first state tournament and will play their first match at 2:30pm on Thursday. Senior Alex DiStefano and junior Sawyer Brault of Sheboygan North are making their second state tournament appearance as a doubles team and will play their first round match also at 2:30pm on Thursday. Brault and DiStefano lost in the first round in 2024. Lastly, De Pere senior Kegan McDonough and junior Tudor Cristescu are making their third doubles team appearance in the state tournament. McDonough and Cristescu received the 7-seed and will have a first round bye. The De Pere duo will see their first action in a second round match on Friday at 10:00am. McDonough and Cristescu lost second round matches in both 2023 and 2024.
