WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament this Weekend

The 48th running of the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament will take place this weekend, March 7-9 at the Resch Center in Green Bay.  The Resch Center has been the home of the Girls State Tournament since 2013.

Fox River Classic Conference member Notre Dame Academy is making a fourth straight appearance in the Division 2 field and is also looking to claim their fourth consecutive Division 2 Championship.  The Tritons have six State Championships under their belts and are competing in their 11th State Championship overall.  Entering the tournament as the #2 seed, if the Tritons are able to four-peat, they would be the first girls basketball team in the state to win four consecutive State Titles.

The Tritons semi-final opponent will be Wauwatosa East.  That game will take place on Friday afternoon approximately 15 minutes after the completion of the semi-final game between Pewaukee and West Salem which starts at 1:35pm.  Pewaukee is the #1 seed and dealt the Tritons their only loss this season 60-52 in the season opener at Notre Dame Academy.  Should Pewaukee and Notre Dame both win their semi-final match-ups it would be the third consecutive year that they would meet in the Division 2 Championship game.

Notre Dame brings a great deal of experience to this year’s state tournament with seniors Gracie Grzesk, Trista Fayta and Sydney Whitehouse all being 4-year members of the Varsity squad.  Fayta was chosen as the player of the year in the Fox River Classic Conference this past season while Grzesk was the 22-23 FRCC player of the year.  Grzesk also became the all-time leading scorer in the history of Notre Dame Academy basketball this past season.  The Tritons also placed five players on this year’s All-Conference teams.  Grzesk, Fayta, and Whitehouse were selected to the 1st team while junior Peyton Musial and sophomore Kaia Waldrop were selected to the 2nd team.  Fayta was also selected as the Defensive Player of the Year.

The Tritons are led by Coach Sara Rohde.  Rohde has led the Tritons to five State Titles as they shoot for their sixth title at this year’s tournament.
